What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy uses drawing, painting and creative making as a way to express and process feelings. You don't need to be "good at art" — the process of creating is what matters, not the end product.

At HeARTscribe, children use creative expression to explore emotions, cope with bullying and stress, build self-awareness, and grow in confidence. Every session is a safe, judgement-free space: warm-up scribbles, a gentle drawing prompt, and — for children who want it — a storytelling step where a young volunteer turns their drawing into a poem or story that is given back to them.

Creative expression has been shown to help children:

  • put words (and colours) to feelings they can't yet explain
  • reduce anxiety and release stress safely
  • process difficult experiences like bullying at their own pace
  • build self-esteem — my story matters enough to become art
  • strengthen friendships and empathy in the classroom

Please note: clinical art therapy is delivered by registered art therapists. HeARTscribe offers therapeutic art and creative wellness sessions run by trained volunteers, and we gladly signpost families to professional support whenever it's needed.
